The elementary years are when children decide what school feels like, whether they are capable of doing hard things, and whether learning is a joy or a chore. Families who choose a private elementary school are looking for a community that will shape a child's heart, mind, and habits for life.
Resurrection Lutheran School has been that community for generations of Triangle-area families. Our campus in west Cary serves students from junior kindergarten through eighth grade, with an affiliated preschool for ages two to five. Families from Westchester Woods, Kildaire Estates, Wyndfall, and Southchase have chosen our elementary program year after year.
A Christian Elementary School Built for the Whole Child
The elementary years are when children master the building blocks of future learning: recognizing patterns, observing the world, asking questions, and listening carefully. They discover the magic of books, imagination, creativity, and self-expression. Our program brings together strong academics, daily faith formation, small classes, and a loving classroom culture. Students learn to take responsibility for their own learning while also learning to be good friends, respectful classmates, and important members of the school family.

Our Elementary Program in Detail
Our elementary program spans junior kindergarten through fifth grade. Each grade builds on the last so that students develop strong academic skills, character habits, and a living faith over time.
Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Junior Kindergarten is a full-day program for children who will be four by August 31. The day follows our standard schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Weekly unit themes rooted in a Biblical worldview introduce our youngest students to diverse subjects and create a foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
Kindergarten is supported by a full-time teacher and a teaching assistant, giving our youngest elementary students two caring adults in the room. The fruit of the Spirit serves as a model for Christian life, and children develop foundational academic skills that prepare them for first grade and beyond.
Grades 1 Through 5
In first through fifth grade, students focus on independence, perseverance, communication, organization, and exploration. Teachers use children's specific interests as gateways into deeper learning, and lessons are designed to be hands-on and richly engaging.
A few signature features of our elementary experience include:
- A curriculum that is wholly engaging rather than rote
- Plenty of time for movement, both inside and outside
- Specialists in Music, PE, Art, Library, and Technology who support classroom teachers
- Spanish added in fourth and fifth grades
- Faculty who coordinate daily so that lessons are reinforced in multiple ways
Students in these grades also navigate the important social and emotional territory of elementary school. They develop friendships, practice self-control, and grow as people who can care for others well.
Small Class Sizes and Personalized Learning
Families evaluating private elementary options in the area often cite small class sizes as a top priority. Small classes allow teachers to know each child well, adjust instruction to readiness and interest, and catch misunderstandings before they become habits. In practice, that means:
- Teachers can conference with every student during writing instruction
- Reading groups stay small and truly leveled, so every child reads at a just-right pace
- Math misconceptions are caught and corrected early
- Hands-on science and STEM activities give every child a meaningful role
- Feedback on work is specific, timely, and connected to each child's next step
The effect is students who feel known, challenged, and encouraged. Parents tell us the difference shows up quickly at home, where their children speak with confidence about their school day.
JK Through 8 Continuity: One Decision, Nine Years
One of the most distinctive strengths of our school is the continuity from junior kindergarten through eighth grade. Most families make their private school decision once, at age four or five, and stay with us through the end of middle school. That kind of continuity is unusual in the Triangle market.
The value shows up in concrete ways. A child who learns to write paragraphs in second grade is writing research papers with the same teacher team by seventh. Friendships formed in kindergarten deepen rather than restarting. Parents build relationships with a faculty they come to know and trust across nearly a decade.
By the time students transition to our middle school program, they already know what is expected of them academically, spiritually, and socially. Confidence built in second grade becomes academic courage in seventh. A habit of service begun in kindergarten becomes leadership in eighth.
Enrichment: STEM, Fine Arts, and Service
Alongside core academics, our students experience meaningful enrichment throughout the week. Our STEM programming gives students hands-on experiences that build problem-solving skills and spark curiosity. Our fine arts program supports creativity through music, art, and performance, giving students space to discover and develop their voices. Through our community service opportunities, students learn early that their gifts are meant to be shared. Together, these experiences help our students grow into confident, curious, and kind young people.
Faith and Character at the Center
Resurrection Lutheran is a Christ-centered school and a mission of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Faith is woven across the school day rather than relegated to a single class period.
In an elementary classroom, that looks like specific, daily practices. Students begin the day with prayer. Chapel brings the whole school together each week for worship, music, and Scripture. Classroom management is shaped by grace, and teachers speak often about the fruit of the Spirit as the framework for how students treat each other. When a science unit on ecosystems sparks a conversation about stewardship, faith is not a tangent. It is the through-line.
We welcome students from many Christian backgrounds, as well as families exploring faith and looking for a Christ-centered school home. Parents often tell us the cumulative effect is a child who treats peers with kindness, approaches teachers with respect, and speaks about school with joy.
